New to Line 6....Need Help!

Ok…I’m new to Line 6 products so forgive me if I sound ignorant & naïve about these products.   I really could use some advice as to what products I need and how they work together.  Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok…first, what I am looking for:

1.              I want to plug my guitar directly into a PA and be able to get great sounds from it.

2.              I also want to do some desktop recording.  I currently use Garageband 09 and I really like the Pod Farm interface and would love to be able to integrate it with garageband for my  guitar tones.

3.              I need to use some of the patches from the custom tone site in order to replicate specific tones when performing  covers.

4.              While I really want to use a unit for performing live, I don’t like the idea of having to be hunched over my unit trying to dial in tones.  I would love to be able to have all of the tones I will need worked out ahead of time and just be able to trigger them later by stepping on a pedal.

5.              I am confused between the line 6 monkey, pod farm,  and gear box software.  I want to be able to control my unit with the computer and then take the unit to a gig to recall what I created on the computer.

Some questions I have:

What is the difference between using a Pod X3 or XT with a FBV Shortboard instead of the X3 & XT Live models?  I like the idea of being able to play with the pod without bending over and still have triggers to use with my feet.

When using custom tone, is it as simple as downloading the patch from the site and triggering when stepping on a pedal?

Thanks for any input…I’m new to this world of Line 6 and multi effect units and amp simulators.

Re: New to Line 6....Need Help!

Sounds like you either need an XT or X3 Live. The main difference between these is the dual tone. If you use the PodFarm software you get dual tones - but if you have an XT you'll only get them if you're on your computer. To get the dual tones live you will need the X3.

The only real difference to owning the the 'bean' version of the Pods with separate floor control is the cost. If you're happy having separate devices at a higher cost then go for what you prefer.

Monkey is the program that checks all your software (XT/X3 firmware, drivers etc) are all up to date.

PodFarm is the latest way to edit patches but uses the computer's CPU rather than the XT/X3. The XT/X3 acts as a dongle for the PodFarm software.

GearBox directly edits the XT/X3 if you prefer to do that (as does the oft preferred but old Line6 Edit).

Might be better to ask those questions on the X3 forum, i don't really know (some X3 users lurk here so you may get a response).

No!

You cannot edit tones With Pod Farm on Devices that have an onboard Editor such as the Pod X3´s Or Pod XT´s!

The Stand-Alone version of Pod farm was created to Edit the Tones/Presets of Line 6 Devices that have no onboard editors & that are computer dependent, such as Toneport´s, Pod Studio & Guitarport.

Re: New to Line 6....Need Help!

Gearbox is what you want!  IMO...

Input 1 (Instrument) – Connect your guitar or bass here using a standard 1/4-inch TS instrument cable. POD X3 itself contains the processing power that turns your naked input signal into that roaring guitar Tone, which is then fed to the “Direct/Studio Mix” and out the Analog Left & Right Outputs and S/PDIF digital output. This signal is also fed to POD X3’s Record Sends digitally to your computer across the USB 2.0 connection. When you are connected via USB to your computer, you can also launch GearBox and use it to alternatively load Tones stored on your hard disc, edit them on your screen, and make adjustments for output and Record Send levels. POD X3 is, of course, also capable of applying two Tones on your Input 1. Just dial up one of the tone presets in the “Blends” folder of POD X3 and you’ll have two complete Tones applied to your Input 1 signal! Or, go the POD X3’s Inputs screen to choose what you want Tone 1 and Tone 2 applied to.
Input 2 (Mic) & Trim knob – Connect a microphone here using a standard XLR cable. You can use the little “Trim” knob to adjust the mic signal coming into POD X3, much like you would on a mixer console. Just like with Input 1, POD X3 itself applies preamp and effects models to your mic input, which is then fed out the Analog Left & Right Outputs and S/PDIF digital output. This signal is also fed out the X3’s Record Sends digitally to your computer across the USB 2.0 connection. When you are connected via USB to your computer, you can also launch GearBox and use it to alternatively load Tones stored on your hard disc, edit them on your screen, and make adjustments for output and Record Send levels. POD X3 is, of course, also capable of applying a Dual-Tone, such as independently slathering a guitar Tone on Input 1, and a mic preamp and effects on Input 2 simultaneously! Just go to the “Pairs” folder of your POD X3 to call up some of these pre-baked guitar/mic Dual-Tones! Or, go the POD X3’s Inputs screen to choose what you want Tone 1 and Tone 2 applied to.

From the Manual.

Gearbox is freely downloadable from this site.

Yes! Free.  Line 6 Editors are free!  Line 6 Plug ins are not Free, and serve another purpose.

Top of this page, look in the Red Banner to the Right.

Gearbox will also install Line 6 Monkey which will help let you know if you are all up to date too!

Re: New to Line 6....Need Help!

It´s a matter of preference!

Line 6 Edit was the editor prior to Gearbox. It was based around Java 5, and may cause some grief if you are not familiar with updating java.

Line 6 edit has all the effect & it´s settings visible in one window. In this regard it´s easier to tweak presets. IMO.

Gearbox is a more complete package, and easier to install.

You can have both installed, and use one at a time.
