I keep coming back to my PODs for another listen, but I still hear the same things that bothered me years ago
I will try to describe what I hear: It seems unnaturally fizzy from top to bottom - the fizz seems attached with digital super-glue and is always there. There is also some kind of disconnect between the player's dynamics and what comes out the other end. Some might say I use too much gain but I don't notice this as obviously with other software. The Cab modeling was very good when first released (many years ago), but now sounds rather 'choked' and one-dimensional to my ears when compared to the current software competition - once again, unnatural fizziness seems to infest a lot of the Cab selections.
PS: When I refer to unnatural fizz, it is not just the amount of it, but nature (or non-tube-nature) of it.
I have a habit of occasionally going back to my older modelers to see if I can coax something new out of them - to see if there's some gold I can yet find - and sometimes, I am pleasantly surprised (the Boss GS-10 being an excellent example). For me the current L6 modeling algos are showing their considerable age. I actually find it easier to get good tones with 'Amp Designer', the new modeling plug-in that comes free with Logic 9 - go figure....

By competition do you mean the Axe-FX? If so, it's not really the competition, it is in a different league. If you mean the GT-10, I'd be interested to hear your reasoning for this statement. Don't get me wrong, I, like most people who know anything about you totally respect your opinion on modelers and guitar tones in general, I just don't get exactly where you are coming from with this statement.
EDIT
Okay, I see you edited your statement to say "the current software competition", now it makes more sense, THX.

Tim,
The main comparison I'm making is with other software - it's all digital modeling software that's producing the sounds, no? As always, it is my opinion I'm giving, and a not-so-subtle nudge to L6 to step up to the plate and take their platform to the next level as others have been doing. The GT-10 has lots of potential but IMHO they blew it when they added the mysterious cocked-wah tonality to most of the amp models - the Cab sim is only good when you select the 'User Cab' feature and build your own, but that works rather well. My comments about Logic's Amp Designer are in comparison to L6's Amp Farm and Gearbox - I've also gotten some very cool tones from Izotope's 'Trash' plugin within Logic. I use the same signal flow as my hardware modelers: Guitar--Comp--Pre EQ--Amp--NR--Post EQ--St. Effects. I just can't help but wonder if there is a shortage of programmers at L6 - who knows?
Right on! I misunderstood, what you say makes sense ![]()
